What Are the Safety Test Methods for Lithium Ion Batteries

1.The safety of lithium ion battery

The safety of lithium ion batteries is our priority, especially in areas related to the safety of life and property such as passenger cars.In order to ensure the safety of lithium ion batteries, people have planned a variety of safety tests to ensure the safety of lithium ion batteries in use, so the battery structure must be planned to ensure that lithium ion batteries can pass the safety test. In order to ensure the safety in use, it is the problem that PLB needs to consider.

2.Test of Lithium Ion Battery

The safety tests for lithium ion batteries mainly include the following aspects. Safety tests such as overcharge, short circuit, acupuncture, squeeze, and heavy object impact are required, and the battery does not catch fire or burst.

Overcharge test: One shall fully charge the lithium ion battery and conduct an overcharge experiment in accordance with 3C overcharge. When the voltage rises to a certain voltage when the lithium ion battery is overcharged, it is stable for a certain period of time. When it rises to a certain limit, the cap of the lithium ion battery is broken and the voltage drops to 0V, and the lithium ion battery does not catch fire or explode.

Short circuit test: After the lithium ion battery is fully charged, the positive and negative poles of the battery are short-circuited with a wire with a resistance of no more than 50m, and the surface temperature of the lithium ion battery is tested. The maximum temperature of the lithium ion battery surface is 140°C. The battery cap is opened, and the battery does not fire and blast.

Acupuncture test: Place a fully charged lithium ion battery on a flat surface. Use a 3mm diameter steel needle to pierce the lithium ion battery in the radial direction. Test that the lithium ion battery does not catch fire or explode.

Squeeze test: Place a fully charged lithium ion battery on a flat surface, apply a 13+1KN squeezing force from a hydraulic cylinder, and squeeze the lithium ion battery from the flat surface of a steel rod with a diameter of 32mm. Once the squeeze pressure reaches the maximum, stop squeezing, and the lithium ion battery does not catch fire and does not explode.
